Elder abuse is the maltreatment of an older adult by family or caretakers. It may include physical and sexual abuse, psychological abuse, neglect, self-neglect, financial exploitation, and denial of adequate medical treatment. In general, elder abuse is a term referring to any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult. As people live longer, the stress and strain of caregiving will make the families more prone to elder abuse. Also, family abuse may be evidence in providing care for a disabled family member. Numerous incidents of elderly and abuse disabled persons are reported each year.
